Standing atop a hillock of red loam soil, Thirumayam Fort seems like an ordinary wall of stone and brick. But head closer and you will realize that these are 17th century ramparts built to house the ruling dynasty of the land. The wall runs around a 40-acre town, complete with its own temples, caves, a jail and a pond.
This site located on the route from Pudukkottai to Madurai, beckons you to halt and look into the history of wars and victories of this period and cheer for the structures which have survived centuries without the use of any fine craftsmanship or modern engineering.
